About

I am a philosopher whose academic specialty is the history of early modern philosophy. My Ph.D. is from the University of California at Berkeley; I also have degrees in philosophy from the University of Oxford and Amherst College.

I have significant professional expertise in online education and extensive experience with faculty self-governance, institutional and program accreditation, academic policy, continuous quality improvement, strategic planning, faculty development, and the assessment of student learning.

I have served in numerous faculty leadership roles and perform accreditation work for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

My primary philosophical research interests are  epistemological and metaphysical issues in Kant and Hegel; I am also keenly interested in some contemporary topics in political philosophy and in a cluster of problems connected to recent work in language, knowledge, and mind.

I also have abiding research interests in areas of the scholarship of teaching and learning related to my work teaching philosophy online.

I am interested in teaching a wide range of philosophical topics as well as in some areas of the social sciences where I believe my philosophical training is especially useful, most notably research methodology.
